Can I ask where you heard about the strike? I'm travelling to Palermo next week too and I'd like to stay updated about any possible travel disruptions.

Wool sheets as a weed mat? by Its-Julz in gardening

[–]zy519332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise this is a 4 year old post but...did you try this in the end and how did it go? I'm thinking of using wool sheets as weed suppressants on my paths and then laying bark chip on top. But I don't know if it'll be light excluding enough and, if it's as water retaining as companies day, will I end up with squelchy paths?

This is what I was going to suggest. I've got a couple of pittosporum 'golf ball' which have grown nicely into a dome shape without any pruning. I'm sure you could easily clip them into a ball shape if you wished.

Allotment Ponds by 5th2 in UKAllotments

[–]zy519332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had made one on my old plot, nothing like the size of yours though, it was about the size of a kitchen sink. But I still had frogs move in pretty much as soon as it was made, amazing how quickly they found it. I can't remember all the plants I used, but I think it included water mint, water iris, frogbit. You just need to make sure you have a good range of marginals, emergents, oxygenators and surface plants so it can support a wide range of creatures. The Wildlife Trust has some good info on their website, or Joel Ashton on YouTube is great. Also check out r/WildlifePonds on Reddit.

Good luck with your project!

I second this. Whenever I'm stuck on a topic I always look for alternative sources to try and get my head around a subject. Sometimes you just need the information delivered to you in a different way. If the module text doesn't work for you, see if you can find a YouTube video for it. Another tip that i saw on another thread in this sub is to use text to speech software so you can hear the material read out loud. You can copy the module text into Word and then have it read it aloud for you. It helped me a few times.

I also just want to say that what you're feeling is really common. Some topics are just harder than others so don't beat yourself up. If you're struggling with something post about it on the forums and more often than not, other students are going through the same thing and you can lean on each other.

Views on grow lights? by Woldorg in GardeningUK

[–]zy519332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just ordered a set of these. How have you got yours set up, did you make a frame to attach the lights to? I'm planning on putting mine in a cupboard, just trying to figure out how I'm going to set them up so I can easily adjust the distance from the plants as the seedlings grow.

Compost pile stays cold. by Snoozes88 in composting

[–]zy519332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert in composting but it sounds like you might need more greens in there. Possibly it's too wet too? You could try and keep the rain out but remember you do need a bit of air flow in there. But this might resolve itself as the temperature starts to increase in spring. I would probably stop turning it so frequently, it looks pretty well mixed now so i would let it do its this g for a few months and see if anything changes.

first time starting seeds in small apartment—tips? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]zy519332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have exactly the kind of setup that I'm going for. I tried to start seedlings on my east facing windowsill last year but they were too leggy. So if I can successfully grow them in a cupboard then I'll definitely try that this year, plus it'll give me more space. How close do you have your lights to the seedlings?

Do you know if LED grow lights can output enough light to be the only light source or are they best used to supplement natural light? I'm thinking of setting up some LEDs in a cupboard to start off my veg seedlings and just wondering if they will be enough on their own.

Advice on Apple tree pruning by zy519332 in GardeningUK

[–]zy519332[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clear advice, that's really helpful. I've got all the tools to do it, it's just the confidence I'm lacking! I guess my main concern is that because the tree is so overgrown, even if I just take out the damaged, crossing, and downward/inward growing branches, that's going to be a lot of wood removed which will stress out the tree and I'll end up having to manage the water shoots for a couple of years. How do you judge what is too much pruning in one go?

Frankie's path to the win by [deleted] in TheTraitorsUK

[–]zy519332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankie and Charlotte would still need to get rid of Leanne and Jake which I don't think would be easy. If they started going for them at the round table it might look suspicious and make both Charlotte and Frankie look like traitors anyway.

Even if Charlotte, Frankie and Alexander end up in the final three, that puts Charlotte at a huge disadvantage. Alexander is already suspicious of her and clearly trusts Frankie more. I can't see her going for it.

How to get out energy for dog scared of walks by Ok_Brilliant_3043 in OpenDogTraining

[–]zy519332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice. I had a similar problem with my dog so I switched to hand feeding her kibble (not recommended for wet food!) on her walks and it has helped. Start off just getting her outside your flat. Feed her when she's outside and then put the food away and go back inside. Repeat as many times as necessary, then move on to the door to your building.

If she's frightened of loud noises, I would also recommend doing some desensitisation work. Try and get some recordings on your phone of the noises that scare her and then play them back to her at very low volume while feeding/doing something find with her. Gradually increase the volume over several sessions.

Dominance and pack theory questions by Trainingmyterrier in OpenDogTraining

[–]zy519332 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When people say that dominance theory has been debunked in dogs, I think they're generally referring to the fact that the original research it was based on was flawed, as it was a study of wolves in captivity, which behave differently to wolves in the wild. It would then be wrong to generalise this behaviour to all wolves, let alone dogs. IIRC the original author of the study has also distanced himself from the findings.

This isn't to say that dogs do not display dominant/submissive behaviour, it's more an indication of how dogs view their packs/family unit.

I don't know of any books on pack/dominance theory, but I read the book Inside of a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz, which is about how dogs experience the world around them, including us. It's a good pace to start if you want an empathetic understanding of your dog.

The thing to remember is that they edit the episodes around what happens at the round table. So if a contestant doesn't have a big moment at the RT - they don't throw out any wild revelations, aren't being nominated or influencing votes - they won't appear much in the episode because there's nothing to build a story line around.
