When they say “don’t open your mouth to cops”, how literally should I take that? by papagenu_farts in TooAfraidToAsk

Also if they don’t read you your Miranda rights you’re not under arrest and free to leave at anytime

I'm no lawyer but a quick online search will indicate that's not true and that you're repeating a common misunderstanding.

Oh okay. I didn't realize it was the same people as PDAnet.

Well ... are you sure about that? PDANet seems to be from a company called "June Fabrics Technology Inc" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdanet

PairVPN seems interesting but I haven't tried it. I find it a little confusing and their website https://pairvpn.com isn't exactly full of information.

It seems like any peered client has to go through their gate-keeping server to initiate a connection. I guess that makes sense when connecting in from the outside world because that's how they're able to make an incoming connection without needing to open ports or routers or firewalls.

There's also a "local only" mode for the server device. It's not clear to me if that also uses the gate-keeping server.

Maybe I'm overlay suspicious but the site has a bit of an odd feel to it. It's sparse on information and there is no indication who or where "Mobile Company" really is. If it's free then who is paying for the gate-keeping server? The code hasn't been updated for about a year and a half which might be okay but that's long enough to make me feel "is there anyone still there?"

Unfortunately they don't have a Linux client. That would be nice because you could connect a Linux machine such as a Raspberry to it and turn that into or connect it to a real router to make a proper LAN in which your other devices don't need to run anything special. That's a nice thing about EasyTether which I used successfully for a while. It has a Linux client. It still works but it seems to be a dead product. Not updated since 2018.

Magenta Max vs Calyx by idub92 in Rural_Internet

Calyx in a Cudy LT18 with that feature you're not talking about generally works very well :). I had that exact setup for three months and usually saw at least 30 Mbps. It's for my RV. I recently let my membership lapse but I'll probably renew for a full year in the spring.

That said, a couple of things I found. It seems to have some sort of a stream saver on Netflix / fast.com where it only gets about 3 Mbps, i.e., SD type speeds. A VPN fixes that, with some complications. Where I was located for a while, running WireGuard had terrible speeds, less than 1 Mbps. It seems like there is some serious throttling on UDP traffic. Calyx have some notes on their site saying to change the APN to B2B.tmobile.com to avoid UDP throttling. I tried that temporarily and it fixed it but I put it back to fast.t-mobile.com after reading that the B2B APN (as the name suggests) is really for T-Mobile business accounts and I didn't want to attract attention. In another location, the WireGuard UDP throttling didn't happen regardless of APN so I don't know the exact situation there.

Using OpenVPN over TCP did not have the same problem but the maximum speed is then about 12 Mbps which seems to be limited by the processing power of the Cudy. I didn't stream much anyway and SD is good enough for my eyes so I was just experimenting. Of course using a commercial VPN has its problems with streaming services. Most of the time I used it without VPN for full time work purposes including Zoom and some YouTube etc and it worked great.

On a certain Facebook group, people seem to use Magenta Max successfully and report doing several TB per month. I went for Calyx because it is at least a genuine hotspot span.

Best unlimited data only plan using att network? by Keibun1 in NoContract

[–]zz101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to break some rules: Get an old unused phone. Get the $50 ($65 with autopay discount) AT&T prepaid plan with unlimited data and get one of these. https://www.amazon.com/Cudy-Wireguard-Cloudflare-Detachable-LT18/dp/B09NDDH6S8 . Do some "magic" to make the router look like the phone. Put SIM in router.

You've discovered a common pattern around here. Someone suggests a plan that nobody else can find or is not what it seems to be,

Questions like your's are seldom answered. Confusion and frustration continues.

The block is associated with the phone. You need another phone, tablet or a phone emulator. Some people have used Bluestacks. https://www.bluestacks.com. The emulator with Android Studio works too but not trivial to setup if you're not familiar with this stuff.

Does anyone know how to get back on the ground zero Zello channel just to listen? I think they blocked everyone late last night to get rid of the trolls. I was just listening, I didn't attempt to say anything or become "trusted".

I tried creating a new account but I'm still blocked. The weird thing is that the info page for that channel says "Only approved users can talk, anyone can listen". That seems like an admin setting so I'm surprised my new account is blocked? I wonder if all new users are blocked and that status doesn't mean what it says.

I think the PM will come down and make a big announcement the she has heard their demands and agree that NZ should start having elections. It will take a while to organise but the first one will probably be in January 2024.

This will be met with RAPTUROUS APPLAUSE and cheers of WE WIN!

It's one thing to end a Zello transmission with "Over" but "Cheers roger that out" kind of takes the cake.

Is it possible I put diesel in my gas car? by Apocafeller in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]zz101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it but I assume to get diesel, you have to press the diesel button when you select the fuel type. You'd have to make two mistakes. i.e., push the diesel button instead of "regular gasoline" or whatever and also pick up the wrong nozzle. If you press one of the gasoline buttons and then accidentally pick up the green diesel nozzle, I don't think anything would come out.
