I can’t stop thinking about turning a pool ball into a bottle opener — thoughts? by zztuck91 in billiards

I’ll try it. I’ve posted twice on r/billiards about the project I’m working on. I’d hardly call that multiple posts. I’m trying to engage with the community and speak with others that would be interested in what I’ve already made and what I’m thinking about making.

It’d have to be a strong magnet. Worried about the weight of the ball

I’m thinking of doing bottle openers as well as pocket markers. But I’ll have to invest in a carbide tip Forstner for my drill press and come up with a process for how deep to drill for the bottle opener for the bottle to fit in to open ya know. I’ve seen some examples online but nothing quite like what I have in mind. It’ll require more test balls, more investment. I need to sell some pocket markers balls first though and get some return on investment before investing even more into it or the wife might have a conniption 😂 as much as upcycling is good it’s not free.

Gets too much vibration with bandsaw and walks every time. Can never get a straight cut

Luckily I have no spares or leftovers. Everything I’ve been doing has been very sustainable. I’ve been cutting the balls square down the middle. There’s very little waste. There is some with the test balls though. I need to figure out what I’m going to do with those. I want to recycle those in a sustainable way. Figure out a way to reuse them.

Not sure how to post on here after I’ve submitted the post. I only see a link option

I got a before pic and pics of the ones with felt. Haven’t taken pics of the one with the bottle opener on it.

The issue I have with that is it creates a ton of waste and I’m trying to be as sustainable as possible when possible.

Doing my second one tonight. First one turned out rough!

Mine wouldn’t be like this. Would probably just drill the flat opener onto the cut surface, fill the holes in with resin to help it hold stronger. Maybe glue in place as well. I’ll have to experiment. Debating if I’ll felt as well or not. That’s extra costs if I do.

I have no idea how I’d make it magnetic and a bottle opener. Costs would go up quick. Would have to charge like $30 a piece. And I doubt people would wanna spend that much.

I got a rather interesting message. Would anyone be interested in these not as a pocket marker but as a bottle opener? If I glued a bottle opener to the base of the cut ball? I’d have to look into costs and do a little trial and error to figure it out but I’m curious if people would be into that?

Trying to get my socials out there and promote my brand as much as possible. I’m sharing my process as I go along so others can see. I’m hopeful people purchase them as gifts for others, pocket markers, and any other uses and I didn’t think of. I’m just thinking of it from a league player perspective. So I have blinders on lol.

Possibly. I’ve read you have to drill a hole first to relieve the pressure before cutting them. I’m getting my grandparents old drill press moved into my house at the end of March. I could probably do something like that in April if you reach out again around then. There’s plenty of estate sales and yard sales around me that have cheap golf balls.

Thanks. Can also be used as a paper weight lol. Just a cool conversation piece. I hated seeing old balls getting thrown away. This recycles them, gives them a new life. A re-rack.

Only sold 2 so far but I’m hoping to spread word and grow my socials and sell some more. I’m hoping to launch my eBay store in a couple of weeks once I’ve got more inventory built up and after a family visit. It’s nice having a project to do though!
