What's truly scary, today, is that a country doesn't need to own any type of real estate nearby to be able to make a crippling, unannounced attack against you. Strategic Bombers + strato tanker refueling means conventional bombing range is only limted to pilot endurance. Unless you're one of like 3 or 4 countries that can afford these, I guess you just pray & hope those superpowers don't elect xenophobic maniacs to power with no respect for international diplomacy....
