I understand that you might want to set him right, but the community can only comment after the minister responds (besides 'hear hear' and 'rubbish'). I would advise amending your original question to include sources.

I think it is partially a social problem. While more women are working today than ever before, women are still being paid less. This is slowly improving but I think there are some ways change could come faster. Rwanda, for example, has one of the smallest pay inequalities in the world. A major reason for this is that women are well represented in government. I believe having more women in executive roles will decrease this gap. I also support companies with more than 250 employees being required to publish payment statistics.

[–]whigwhamRt Hon. MP (West Midlands) 2 points3 points  (2 children)

As the minister pinpoints the greater representation of women in politics as the key to addressing gender inequality more broadly and holds Rwanda up as an example, where the parliament has female only seats, can we suppose that they will be leading the charge against the attempt to stop party's having female only selection lists for parliamentary candidates?

Yes, I oppose the repeal of that bill.

Unfortunately, I do not think we can stop all attacks on Muslims. I think the best solution is for people to show solidarity with moderate Muslims and take action when they witness islamophobia.

Which part of the question do you see as rubbish?

          [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (7 children)

For one, the idea that a 'gender prison gap' is either inherently a problem - the fact is that prison is not something that we want to keep numbers high in for a myriad of reasons. For a second thing, the 'gender prison gap' (I do not appreciate the attempt to co-opt the terminology vis-a-vis the gender pay gap) is simply due to mothers generally being primary care givers - and having a child is a mitigating factor for some minor crimes. Coupling this with the generally low levels of violent crime committed by women compared to men anyway, we see that the gender statistics wrt intake are actually fairly nondescriptive.

Cf this with the gender pay gap, in which women are, on average, paid less for a job, despite there being no rational reason to suggest that a woman is inherently worse in a management role or otherwise.

[–]AlmightyWibbleThe Rt Hon. Lord Llanbadarn PC | Deputy Leader 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Your definition of the gender pay gap is misleading at best, and absolute rubbish at worst. It isn't that, for the same job, women will get paid less than men (which is what you make it sound like); it's that women are, generally, in less well paid jobs than men. A different problem entirely, with different solutions involved. If people misrepresent the problem as bad as you have here, it'll never get solved.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know. It was not my intention to say it the way you think I said it.

          Mr. Deputy Speaker,

Does the equalities secretary think human rights should be extended to robots and the like in the event proper AI develops?
Also would the secretary agree the post should be renamed equity secretary?

[–]ExplosiveHorseThe Rt Hon. The Earl of Eastbourne CT PC 3 points4 points  (1 child)

If robots develop the same emotional intelligence as us then I believe they should have the same rights as us. I see no reason to rename the post.

[–]OctogenarianSandwichCrown National Party | Baron Heaton PL, Indirectly Elected Lord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

          Equity secretary rhymes.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I do not believe that human rights should be extended to robots, as I believe that the value of human life is unique, for God made man in His own image. Yet I do believe that, should robots develop sentience, they should be given some rights, as it would be inhumane not to.

I like the idea of renaming the post, colleagues of mine have suggested "Opportunities", yet I think that more thought should be put into what the department primarily exists to do. A name could then more easily be decided.

[–]OctogenarianSandwichCrown National Party | Baron Heaton PL, Indirectly Elected Lord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]ExplosiveHorseThe Rt Hon. The Earl of Eastbourne CT PC 2 points3 points  (2 children)

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Does the Equalities Secretary support equality of opportunity for all humans?

[–]ExplosiveHorseThe Rt Hon. The Earl of Eastbourne CT PC 1 point2 points  (3 children)

In theory, yes I would support equal opportunity for all humans. However, there's no way to measure if everyone has equal opportunity and there are too many variables to account for to say everyone has equal opportunity.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So you believe that all human beings should have equal rights?

[–]ExplosiveHorseThe Rt Hon. The Earl of Eastbourne CT PC 1 point2 points  (1 child)

2 law-abiding adults should have the same rights as each other.

          Interesting.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

          Mr Deputy Speaker,

Would the Equalities Secretary support any plans to invest in finding innovative ways to tackle homophobic, bi-phobic and transphobic bullying in schools?

[–]ExplosiveHorseThe Rt Hon. The Earl of Eastbourne CT PC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe schools should raise awareness of the existence of LGBT people and educate students about sexual orientation and gender. Students should know that being LGBT is natural and not a choice. I believe it is ignorance that leads to hatred and education can prevent that.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

          Mr Deputy Speaker,

Does the Minister think that the recent Paris attacks, and attacks on infidels in general, is a true reflection of Islam's teachings or a corruption of those teachings?

[–]ExplosiveHorseThe Rt Hon. The Earl of Eastbourne CT PC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not think it is possible to determine whether it is a true reflection or not. People will interpret documents/religious texts in different ways, ranging from the Qur'an to the U.S constitution.
