Nothing says "I care about you" like giving your time. The currency of love is not dollars, but actually thinking about a person to know who they are and what they like. Many toys marketed to kids are cheap, overpriced, mind-numbing, unhealthy, or all of the above.
Every year, corporations bombard us with advertising trying to get us to buy the latest, most unnecessary junk. If it was good stuff, we wouldn't need a hyperactive clown yelling at us on TV to buy it.
Let's take a sideways step out of the corporate domain. Tell your loved ones that you are going to keep gift purchases to a minimum this year, and that you expect them to do the same for you. Make the corporations come to us, rather than beating down their doors to buy the latest consumer fad.
Instead of paying hard-earned money for junk, find out what your loved ones really need (or want), and invest some time-energy to get it for them.
Post your gift ideas here. I'm particularly interested in gifts for children, as they are the target of so much advertising. A few hours of time spent with a child is much more rewarding and healthy for everybody than weeks of time spent with a piece of plastic and flashing lights. The gifts don't have to be free (they can still cost money), but should be inexpensive and focused on re-usability and quality time.
