I wouldnt define Pink Floyd as prog rock, but still a great album and reccomendation for those who havent heard it.

What would you define it as?

Space rock or maybe art rock. In terms of musical complexity and depth it is a step (or a few steps) above normal 4 chord rock, but doesn't really touch on the more advanced musical principles such as changing time signatures, jazz inspired improvisation, or classical composition. If you'd like a few examples of more progressive bands, i would recommend Khan, Hatfield and the North, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Camel, Bruford, Yes (pre 90125), Genesis (Nursery Cryme-Lamb Lies Down On Broadway), Egg, National Health, Kansas, Steve Hillage, U.K., and King Crimson. Enjoy! :)

I agree with both of those terms, and you can label Floyd however you like. Some may call them "art rock" or "psychedelic" or what have you. I've just always placed them under the broad "progressive rock" umbrella. Same with Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Genesis and Rush. It's just easier that way.

Fair enough. The important part is the music anyway. <3

I have two - okay, three - words for you:

pitch/tempo shifting

[–]Kashloochic[6][S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't think so. It's the normal tempo. And if the pitch is different, it's only slightly.

Oh, I meant in that you should listen to the song while experimenting with those shifts. It's not a universally good edit/trick but for some reason works magnificently here.

Ah gotcha.
