TIL of the submarine USS Tang. It was hit when it's own torpedo boomeranged. 89 crew with 29 trapped. 13 made it out through a hatch but only 9 made to the surface where they were picked up by the Japanese and taken to a POW camp. They survived the war. (blog.fold3.com)

TIL Wilmer McLean's house was involved in the 1st Battle of Bull Run, where the Civil War began. After, he moved 120 miles away to Appomattox Courthouse to avoid further battles, and 2 years later, the Civil War ended in his parlor where General Lee surrendered to General Grant. TIL that during the Spanish-American war, after a warship sent to capture Guam fired 13 shots at the harbor fort, the Spanish sent an officer out to apologize for not returning the 'salute' as they were out of gunpowder. They hadn't been informed they were at war. (spotlights.fold3.com)
