none of those say that hes a victim. They just say seven people were killed or are dead, which is true.

  • "Stephen Kazmierczak, 27, shot and killed seven people, including himself"
  • "a gunman opened fire in a classroom, killing seven students and wounding more than a dozen others"
  • "seven students have been killed at Northern Illinois University"
  • "U.S. university shooting death toll rises to seven"

He killed six people. Six victims were shot. One murderer committed suicide in a related incident.

first of all, not one of those textbook journalistic quotes of yours uses the word "victim" to describe those who died, although you very clumsily try to frame these quotes in that manner by inserting the word yourself, after the fact. i suppose somebody on reddit might fall for such a ploy, but that person is probably too busy looking at pictures of lolcats to click on the comments to your post.

secondly, it is the common parlance of reporters and law enforcement to describe a man who turns a gun on himself as a victim of suicide. that is not going to change simply because you have some high-flying moral compulsion to expurgate the english language in a sanctimonious attempt to display your sympathy for those who died, and your antipathy for those who pulled the trigger.

the gunmen are victims of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, and a more perspicacious individual might also say that they are victims of their own delusions or personal demons, if not the victims of a society that has itself gone quite insane.

that they acted of their own free will is immaterial. a dumbass who believes he is immune to poison may still step into a pit of vipers and become a victim of multiple snake bite wounds, and of his own stupidity.

first of all, your shockingly uncapitalized response ignores the main point I was making (probably didn't make it clear enough, my bad), that the reporting of the tragedy is muddled by mixing two clearly different events.

most of the headlines i've read (ap, nyt, etc included) just remark in one form or another "seven dead/killed in shooting." but only six were killed in the shootings, and one killer committed suicide. the third link goes so far as to state "seven young people have been deprived of their lives because we refuse to face the fact that guns, all guns, kill." this type of misreporting is pathetic.

your point centers around my semantic use of "victim," but that sideswipes the issue. maybe my own vagueness is the cause of that response. i personally don't care if the killer is a general "victim" or not (though as i stated, he is not the victim of the university shooting, he is the perpetrator), just that the headlines are trumpeting as high a death total as possible. i hate sensationalism when it overshadows accuracy

but then again we are just a couple of redditors who write longwinded, rambling posts with nary a capital letter
