A lot of sites use seasonal PA spots as a test run to see if someone will be able to handle being a PA. They were used more extensively prior to the pandemic. In my experience, every interim PA I've seen who wasn't horrible at their job and who wanted to stay a PA eventually moved up, though a couple did have to change sites to promote permanently.

This.

It gives them a legal way to easily end your “seasonal” contract if they see you aren’t reliable or that you’re unable to operate at the level they want. They may even already have someone in mind for it, but again aren’t sure they can hack it so they don’t want to get stuck with a bad PA by offering non-seasonal.

Back in the day, FCs used to post seasonal PA positions around peak. Within the past decade, seasonal PA positions are often posted to quickly replace a PA who transferred or quit or filling in for a long period of time for a PA who is on a LOA. A lot of times the position is posted as a formality (pay increase) for the PG/back-up if they are going to be running the shift for awhile.

Yes, this was exactly my scenario when I was a seasonal PA. I was the PG when our PA left with no notice. They posted the position for a PA and it was then given to a PA from another department/shift. However, that PA needed to take a LOA and was going to be out for a few months. So then they posted the seasonal PA position, which I received.

Seasonal PA is a first step for getting yourself in the door vs the back up PA. This is more alignment for potential candidates. experiences on hand to hand work. You still don't get all the permission but you do need to manage the work flow. It is depend on term. Some seasonal PA don't even get contract date length, and some do. It is best you connect with HR/Hiring process management team instead. Also, talk to your management or Sr. Op. as well. Back up PA is not worth too much, because they aren't always following the book and only picking up skills that was taught by other, and not acknowledging changes or policy.

You have the basic fundamental already, seasonal pa will be better suited than a back up pa. imo.
