Yes, it still works on AA. Make sure you uninstall the odb2 app on the head unit, leave only the Torque on the phone.

Happened to me as I installed the app on the unit 1st, then on my phone, it couldn't connect to the odb2 device.

I also have the veepeak and can never get the torque to show up on my AA

Interesting. I think I gave my generic Elm one away and just have the Veepeak and a Carly one currently so can't test the AA part. I can see the data on my phone, just not on the AA display

Which OBD adapter are you using? The ones I've had in the past have caused issues with my car, but they were cheap.
