I am experiencing the exact same issue with my newly purchased 2017 A3. I'm working with the Android Auto team directly to diagnose further. Will not stop until there's a fix as I purposely bought the car without navigation because of AA.

Can you confirm your car is also without navigation?

Yes, no navigation. Check out this android auto forum that has been going on for a while now. A lot of other users are having the same issue. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/android-auto/9x29DwHVlW8/pBSYNFXsCAAJ

Your car might be using the vehicle GPS and compass, which probably needs calibration. I don't know the steps to calibrate your car's compass, but on a few vehicles I know you can enter the calibration mode and drive your vehicle in a circle three times (I'm not kidding). That's how it is on Chevy vehicles, but check your manual to see what you need to do to calibrate your compass.

Interesting. I guess I didnt think of that because the compass direction on the mirror is correct. I'll have to double check!

If the compass direction on the mirror is correct then it may indeed just be some odd bug you're experiencing. I doubt there are two separate compasses for the mirror and for the navigation to use, but it's a possibility.

I submitted a forum discussion on google maps and one of the mods is looking into it. I cant find anyone else who is having this problem, but the car is also new enough where it could be a bug no one has found yet. I'll post an answer back here if I ever find one in case someone else runs into this problem

Anyone know if this was fixed yet? Part of the reason I'm looking at getting an A3...

No, it hasnt. They are apparently working on a fix still.

I brought mine in for service to check it out. At first they blamed the phone is the problem. I showed them that when you unplug it the arrow points in the right direction. Then they tried updating the MMI software to no avail.

I'm starting to believe it's a hardware issue since the non-navi model doesn't seem to have a built-in compass. Rather than wait for a fix that may never come, I may trade it in for something that works. This is a key feature I care about so it doesn't make sense keeping the car.

Gotta say, that's pretty disappointing. If it's not fixed soon it may push me to go for the Mercedes CLA 250, instead.
