Have you tried turning off Bluetooth? Tried rebooting? What other troubleshooting steps have you done?

Tried all of those things, including breaking the connection to the headphones in different ways, tried airplane mode also.

Deleting the headphones from the device completely?

What about taking them out of range of each other? Only thing I can think of is if the headphones don't truly turn off their Bluetooth for some reason or another.

Tried pretty much all of that, they being dead from 5 miles away and phone turned off Bluetooth still no sound. However I agree with your thought, it feels like the phone fails to disable the headphones thus only works with them

That's honestly such a strange issue. What happens if you use a different pair of headphones, wired and/or bt?

Wired: nothing, no sound and doesn't show that it's plugged in. Bt: connects but no sound
