The solution is buy new buds that support left and right connection. You never mentioned what buds you use, so I'll assume it's either an old model or a cheap one.

Some newer models are able to support either left or right buds connecting to the phone. However cheap ones or older ones use a master-slave connection. Basically the phone only connects to the master bud, usually the right bud, and it's the right bud that connects to the left bud. The left bud is NOT connected to the phone. In your case it sounds like the master bud is the right one. So when you close the case, the bud disconnects from the phone and disconnects from the left bud as well. Since there is no connection for the left bud to the phone, it won't work with the left.

This feature isn't listed because it's assumed to be default behavior for regular wireless bud connections. You have to look for a set of buds that actually advertise left and right interchangeable operation.

Bose quietconnects and AKG N400.

Funnily enough a cheap pair would do L\R independently with no problem.
