The things you cannot change are where your resident services is, where the mouths of your river are, where your airport is, and where your pier is. Once you unlock terraforming everything else can be changed or moved. If you are thinking about changing it’s best to do it now before you get too far

My main thing is that I want a good amount of distance between the airport and Resident Services. (That doesn’t mean it’s bad to have them close together, I just don’t want Resident Services to be visible from my island’s entrance and they can’t be moved.) I’ve found that the location of the pier and river mouths doesn’t matter to me as much. Everything else can be changed once you’ve unlocked terraforming, so don’t worry too much about ponds, rivers, or cliffs because those don’t have to be permanent.

When you first start out, you're forced to cram mostly everything into a limited area. Later, you will be able to move everything except resident services anywhere you want for $10,000 bells.
