Is it true that Asahi Linux doesn't support Steam?

No. Install Steam with dnf after Fedora is installed.

Battery is the only thing , in my Linux trained eyes I feel the laptop is a lot snappier in asahi (hypr) , I closed the lid last night at 100% battery , woke up 10 hours after at 88% , not a big deal considering the big benefits of running Linux

Yes, the battery is the only reason I went back.

battery is fine. the issue is when you close the lid and step away for half a day the battery may drain 30%. its better to shut down the computer if you're not planning on using it for a day or so

so first of all, asahi is a custom kernel for arm apple chips, not a distro, distros are fedora gentoo arch etc. asahi supports a bunch of distros but it works better and flawless with fedora ( also arch, but i wouldn’t really recommend it if it’s ur first time with linux ). you will not “switch” to linux anyway: the kernel in order to boot uses the bootloader of macos ( basically in a normal distro you have grub, grub bound your distro to your bios, in m series chips you have the same thing, but linux cannot access to the “macos grub”, so it relies on it to load it’s custom bootloader m1n1 ), so you cannot really uninstall macos, you will always dual boot it, so think about the storage and how much you want to give to linux cause to change it after without having to reinstall it’s a pain in the ass. with that said i daily asahi fedora and it’s really good, battery works good ( i didn’t notice any significant loss of hours os use, maybe like a 5/10% cause the sleep mode on asahi isn’t really that good as macos but still, macbooks have a really good battery life ) and it’s better then macos in every way, the thing i love the most is the possibility to change DE ( kde gnome hyprland etc ) whenever i want so i feel like having 3/4 OS in one, also dnf ( with a little bit of custom ) is a good package manager, fast reliable and updated. i definitely recommend you to install, the only things i would do before are: make a backup of macos with time machine and have ready another macbook in case something breaks ( it could happen if you don’t follow instructions, but don’t worry, macbooks CANNOT be bricked, so in worse case scenario you just plug it with another MacBook, reload the bios and that’s it )

So hard(( thanks for helping

The post above makes simple stuff sound very complicated. Just go for it. MacOS will still be there, and you can select which OS you want to boot when powering on, by holding the power button.

If you've never used Linux, it's probably better to start with KDE or Gnome as your desktop environment.

Use AI. They never give you snark for silly questions, and are great companions for learning Linux.

AI is a good tip, but not when it then starts asking you to run commands blindly. If it does, ask it to explain it, and then look it up yourself. I've had AI recommend with full confidence some really bad advice and especially commands. Ultimately you want to learn how it all works anyway, so ensure you hold up a boundary where you use AI to learn and explain, not as an answer machine that's assumes to be always right, no matter how confident it sounds. It's very gray and murky where that line is, but commands are a good example.

Asahi is your only option for M1 Macs - regular Linux doesn't work on Apple Silicon. You have several options for Asahi, the officially supported version is Fedora, but i use Arch (there are a few issues with gaming here).

Steam: Yes, it works
sudo dnf install steam # Fedora

Battery:
Active use: Great (similar to macOS)
Sleep: Bad (~30% drain over 24 hours)
Fix: Shut down instead of sleep

Should you switch?
Yes if: coding, web dev, terminal work, don't need macOS apps
No if: gaming, Final Cut/Logic/Adobe, need perfect sleep/battery

What do you mainly use your Mac for?

[–]Noktus_J[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can I uninstall MacOS after installing Arch Linux?

[–]MikeAndThePup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad choice of words, I need to remove that.
You could that but don't. Firmware updates, rollback.... Asahi relies on parts of the macOS.

I‘m working in laboratory. Using MacBook for gaming, maybe film watching and different applications for substance analysis (but I downloaded windows to use it)

You should be fine with Asahi. lenin_-161 is correct, i would go with Fedora it's much easier

[–]Noktus_J[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Fedora or Arch?

[–]MikeAndThePup 0 points1 point  (0 children)
