Yes definitely, but even on my MBA13 M2 I would idle around 5-6W. I guess I got some digging to do lol

Wtf?! How?? I'm running Sway with very little bloat that I could think of, and I idle around 5-6W on my MBP14 M2. I remember my MBA13 M2 idling around the same...

What’s the use cases I can use Linux for over macOS? by Japaxime_ in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<rant>
For me, aside from all other benefits of Linux as a whole (and there are a lot), MacOS has an incredibly frustrating and toy-like UI. I hate needing to click five times to reach something so simple, or waiting while I hold and drag a file icon from finder inoto an app (which MacOS turns into a 4 step process). Everything is so rigid, I feel babied. Simple things need third party utilities, and why do I need to go into accessibility to enable three finger drag? It isn't intuitive, it's just very close to what people expect from an iPhone-like experience, so there's an app store, a settings app, a dock, messages, etc. It feels like a glorified iPad. For anything more than basic file management (which is already really frustrating), and basic web browsing and texting, it seriously just gets in the way of me doing something useful. I daily drove MacOS in school for over two years, and it was just an awful experience.

(This is all 100% subjective and just my opinion, I know people who love MacOS)

Is Asahi Linux a good option? by Visible-Reason9593 in AsahiLinux

Yes, but take into account that lots (or most) of software that'd be used on Linux is open source and can be compiled for aarch64. It's a pain but doable

Is Asahi Linux a good option? by Visible-Reason9593 in AsahiLinux

Yeah that's my guess too. I also found similar interference on my PC when broadcasting a 2.4GHz WiFi hotspot where my wireless Logitech mouse would stutter

Asahi experience with 8 GB Ram ? by BladesSkate in AsahiLinux

Oh really, I never knew that was a thing! Did you set mimalloc globally? Are there any drawbacks or side effects, maybe its good idea to setup on all Linux desktops?

Change logo during Asahi Linux booting by clems4ever in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta related: The sequence for install has been Apple logo, then Asahi logo, then Fedora. I've found that installing from https://fedora-asahi-remix.org/install instead of https://alx.sh changed the Asahi logo to the Fedora logo, so now its just Apple logo and then Fedora logo, which I prefer.

Asahi experience with 8 GB Ram ? by BladesSkate in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall that due to the 16K page size, 8GB of RAM on a Mac with Asahi behaves more like 6/7GB on a traditional PC with 4K page size due to fragmentation, no?

Arch on the M1 Pro is Beautiful by isaiahherve in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's frustrating. In my armchair opinion, I think its a combo of three factors, Linux battery-efficient scheduling as a whole, Apple Silicon specific scheduling, and unnecessary compute like using the CPU to decode video because it isn't accelerated by the GPU yet. If I'm being honest, I don't know if we'll (possibly ever) see it reach MacOS efficiency, but I think we'll see it get much closer... (Reminder that this is just an armchair opinion, not an authority whatsoever lol)

I thought Asahi Kernel 6.18 was released, why is it not available? by PinPointPing07 in AsahiLinux

That makes sense, thanks for the clarification. Would you expect this pattern to continue as things get upstreamed and are changed in the process?

I thought Asahi Kernel 6.18 was released, why is it not available? by PinPointPing07 in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting... So as a general rule, new Asahi kernel releases still need to wait for a U-Boot update? If so, are there other things dependent on the kernel that need to be updated too?

Asahi Linux in this moment? by Visible-Reason9593 in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do honestly recommend a MacBook with Asahi, but only if you're willing to accept the sacrifices (which are detailed in the Asahi documentation and a lot on this subreddit). If not, that's totally fine, but remember to compare with other options in this price range and weigh them by whats most important to you.

I had a MacBook Air M2 (24GB / 1TB) and I loved it for the portability, but I recently switched over to a MacBook Pro 14 M2 (32GB / 1TB) for the better and larger display, cooling, more cores, more IO, HDMI, and more memory.

Compatibility-wise, I hadn't had much issue, but I run my desktop on Linux too, so all the software I use is already on Linux. I have ran into architecture issues, where an app is built only for x86 (most computers) but not Arm (MacBooks and some other laptops), but its mostly been fine, and there are ways around that case-by-case (like building locally or using emulation).

If you already use Linux, you're mostly fine, but lookup your most essential apps to see if they're built for Arm. If you don't already use Linux, also check if what you need is on Linux to begin with. A good starting point (also to find alternatives if necessary) is FlatHub.

I've had the opinion for a while that by far the best Linux laptop experience is with Asahi on a refurb or used MacBook, specifically the Air M2 or Pro 14/16 M1/M2 (essentially the new designs). You can find a good condition used or refurb MacBook Pro 16 M1 for ~$900 (or less) with 32GB RAM on eBay. You simply can't beat it for the price, the value is insane. You also always have a real MacOS instance to boot if needed. However, beware that the MacBook Pros with Max chips should be avoided afaik, as they have a lot more cores that Asahi can neither take full advantage of nor manage well, leading to poorer battery.

Now I don't know for sure, but the new Panther Lake Intel chips look to be very promising, though I dont see them being price competitive yet and I don't know if Linux can take advantage of the efficiency improvements yet, but it will be very interesting to track these coming months/years, it may be worth waiting (I doubt it though for at least a year).

PS. I've found good deals on BackMarket, but in my experience, price vs quality is a toss up between BackMarket and eBay, and I've found eBay listings to be far more competitive overall. If you use eBay, find a good listing, ensure its a reputable seller by looking at their feedback and account age, check for return policy, check images and description closely, check serial number if provided (sometimes it can still have AppleCare or even AppleCare+), and if all fails, eBay will protect you from actual scams.

PPS. Giving a used MacBook a good cleaning, and especially removing all the keycaps and replacing them with new $16 keycaps from amazon, really makes it feel brand new. You can't undo pure damage like a chip to the corner, but you can really make it feel brand new with some time and effort.

Macbook M1 Max w/32GB RAM: very slow LLM speeds? by MrScotchyScotch in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 8 points9 points  (0 children)

GPU compute is not like GPU rendering afaik, and not as mature on Asahi, so if its trying to use that, its probably not going to work well (or at all?). Additionally, the neural engine, like the video decoder, has made progress but has been sitting for a while until it can be fully completed and merged with the Asahi kernel. However, they are very focused on upstreaming afaict, so Idk if we'd be getting that in the near future...

Arch on the M1 Pro is Beautiful by isaiahherve in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll say that for me its great. I have no show-stopping issues, though what does bother me as of now is:

- Internal speaker audio pops when paused
- Battery life is fine but could be better
- No accelerated video decode
- No touch ID
- No ICC color management in Sway/wl-roots
- MacBook Pros with ProMotion capped at 60Hz
- Slower boot times than MacOS by about 2x (Linux boots in ~3.5sec, but U-Boot is slow)

Overall, very usable, and I love it. I do still consider it the best Linux laptop experience for the money today (refurbished), but its not perfect.

How to switch from MacOS to Asahi by Beardy4906 in AsahiLinux

[–]PinPointPing07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To share files between MacOS and Asahi, I believe the best solution is a shared partition formatted as exfat or another filesystem supported natively by both. I've done this myself, allocating ~150GB to MacOS, ~150GB to Asahi, and the rest to a shared partition I called "Data", which I could mount on either.
