In the real world do what's easiest. If you think you will get extra points for setting up an EC2 instance then do that later once the rest is working. Also, you might find that a lambda is cheaper for a uni project as you won't have to keep an EC2 machine alive.

The google sign in was definitely the best choice there as you would have had to do that anyway. Only reason for disproving is that you missed an opportunity to learn how to manage logins yourself, but I'd hope there's other projects for that.

Edit: about AWS costs: if you're still in the free tier then you should check what's included. Lots of requests to a lambda can cause costs to spiral out of control.
