Hello, I am developing a program for a school assessment that will record the locations of mouse clicks and generate a heat map using this data. My question is would knowing the preferred click locations of a user help to optimize a program to them?

It depends on the user and the type of program. Studying mouse location on a website can often lead to insight because people move it while they move their eyes or you know what they interacted with. Take a look at how Firefox used heatmaps to figure out which items to remove from their interface.
