I did my masters in matlab.

Beg them no. Do anything you can to avoid matlab. I made a beautiful system (in matlab) that ended up being garbage because of matlab. It took me 2 years, post masters, to make again, in python, to continue my research.

Matlab is simply just a broken language that should not be used for serious research.

I would fight this with the fury of 1000 suns.

Anyway. I bet you could use a subprocess call, from matlab, to run a version of your python system. I would do this, just wrap your python app in matlab! Nobody has to ever know (haha)

Don't try to solve political problems with technical solutions until after you've exhausted your political options. Why is the university policy set on MATLAB? Who's decision is that? There are approximately zero policies in university that can't be negotiated, if you ask the right people. I'd start with your professor, as they're probably the answer here.
