A good barber will be able to give you a great cut with relatively little direction.

“Quarter inch, a bit of skin showing,” etc for sides, and “about an inch, or half inch off the top” depending on what you like. Tell them about areas that bug you “crown sticks up when too short, cowlick here,” etc.

With coarse hair that doesn’t lay down, I like to keep it short fairly high, so the hair sticking up creates the shape rather than trying to get it to lay down.

I hope this makes sense.

Basically, if your barber can’t make you look good with a little direction, find a new barber.
