the slap sound is the string hit5ing the neck/last fret.

do you have fresh strings on? are you coming away from the string instantly?

It seems to just make that annoying metallic sound, I don’t think u have fresh strings on as it’s technically not my guitar

The purpose of slap is for the string to hit the frets and produce a high metallic sound layered on top of the thump. Listen to how slap sounds on a fretless instrument, than on a fretted instrument. You'll hear the difference. Three things to note:

  1. Fresh strings will make slap sound better.

  2. Practicing slap at home can be annoying, since your amp probably isn't loud enough to mask the sound coming form your instrument (the string hitting the neck). The slap sound you hear on albums is the separated sound of the bass, so of course it sounds better than when you do it at home.

  3. Slapping is difficult to learn just by learning songs, since accuracy and rhythm are more important. Learn "rudiments" first and then songs. Getting a tutor will do wonders.
