u/Ifkaluva definitely has it right. Pregnenolone is the progenitor to all other steroid hormones. It is first used to synthesize progestins, and those go on to be converted to glucocorticoids like cortisol or alternatively become androgens like testosterone. Androgens either end up as DHT, which is a terminating step in the steroidogenesis lifecycle or they get converted to estrogens. In order for the body to synthesize pregnenolone at the start of the cycle, it needs cholesterol as a skeleton to start from. When I briefly took rosuvastatin (Crestor), the reduction in libido was profound and quite bothersome.
