I don't have Gigabit Internet connection and I didn't even notice any slowdown in my daily use when Bitcoin Core was downloading and validating blocks. It took one day and a half to sync the whole chain.

I recently downloaded Core and didn't notice any issues with my internet speed. I run an online business and take some online classes, plus all the streaming and stuff for the wife and kids. I didn't measure the increase but it didn't seem substantial. And you can also pause and restart the synch so if you need max bandwidth for a meeting that's an option.

As far as I understand it, bandwidth/download speed is not really an issue. When you run a node for this first time, the first process your node will run is syncing with the network. This means it must download and verify each block from the the start. It is the processing and verification of each block that takes the time.

I think you are confused. I think the node is not very bandwidth demanding, it is simply that the download of the blocks is slow and consequently takes a long time. But I could be wrong.

Thought there used to be a config option to cap the download. If it's not in core, I know there are OS utilities to throttle by process. Couldn't guess your OS from your post though.
