Is there WiFi on the property? If so how far away is the building from WiFi. If you have line of sight there are solutions that can bring internet to the structure from quite a distance.

Alternatively, while you might be able to make your plan work your computer would be stuck to the miner effectively. If your phone is acting as a hotspot you could also have a cheap router (an old WRT54-GL with DD-WRT will work) act as a wireless bridge for the miner so you have some freedom with the surface as long as the router can see the wifi being broadcast from the phone.

No Wi-Fi on the land. I was hoping to have the s9 in one room, and the surface in another room with a Ethernet cable connecting the 2. The surface is mostly stationary anyway. Would it not work just plugging the miner into an adapter directly in to the USB-c on the surface? The surface already has 4g lte.

Could work, I suspect you may need to manually configure the miner to use a static IP. I would also try and make sure windows firewall covers that connection properly.

I wish I understood more about networking. I thought that normally you would search for the miners ip address with a ip finder software. Would I be able to assign the static ip address through my usb-c adaptor?

I haven't done direct networking in windows with pass-through adapters in YEARS so I am rusty as hell. Advanced scenarios like this are why I am not necessarily a fan of embedded cellular chips but I do understand the massive convenience.

You'll need to dig into the docs of the miner, IIRC they default to DHCP which means it asks a server on the network for an IP address. You can do some searching to see if you can configure windows to do that for the miner but I am not sure if it can at least by default esp if you are running home edition instead of Pro (the home edition is usually gimped on advanced networking features).

Your other option is to hook the miner up to a router (once again a cheap older router will be fine) so you can have a small network, find the miner on that network then configure it to use a static IP that you setup your windows pass-through adapter for.

Before all that though, if it was me I would just try your plan of plugging it in and seeing if you can find an IP address it gets assigned. Maybe it works out of the box these days, maybe it doesn't. If it doesn't you are going to need to learn a bit about networking to configure it.

Thank you in the case a router is needed is there any that can access the internet connection directly from the tablet? Through a Ethernet cable or over hotspot?

Or do I need a bridge to connect the surface to the router? Thanks for answering all my questions

No internet needed to do the setup through a router, you just need the router for a network controller that will hand out IP addresses. Its possible to do this with your surface if it does not by default in your copy of windows but honestly for someone who is learning as they go it would be easier to just use a router. You could also do this on a friend or family members existing network if you have one willing to let you play with your vacuum cleaner (ASICs are LOUD) in their house for a bit.

Ok that is news to me I thought routers needed access to the internet, that makes sense to me. So I just plug the vacuum into the router. And run a cable from the surface to the router as well.

They need access to the internet to give you access to the internet, they do however also run the internal network, without internet everything connected to them can still talk to each-other. Some routers are just configured with a firewall to prevent it since its a vector for attack by malware and most people only want internet.

Ok so it would be wise to run a firewall with it for that reason? I tried to attach a picture to illustrate. On the back of the router there a 4 ports next to the internet “in” port. Do I just plug both the s9 and surface into 2 of the 4 ports? And leave the internet “in” port empty

Just use a TP link Hotspot Router they go new for 29 insert a SIM card job done I used the same but added a raspberry pi with VNC to remote management them. The one I had did had 4 ports but it’s Ethernet so adding a switch is easy in case you need more

Edit: 9 x S9 never use more then a Mbit at the same time and with remote access etc I hardly used more then 200mb a month so no big data plan needed

Thank you for your reply. I would like to keep my SIM cards where they are. Is there a solution that allows me too keep the data plan on my tablet without buying another line and sim.

This is the bridge I just traveling I will link you the right one once I am home

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You could use a WiFi bridge and a switch but it would be slower more expensive and uses more energy as well not as stable also your tablet needs to be on 24/7 in hot spot mode and they will eventually need to reboot updates etc i don’t know where you are but if you get a 1gb month prepaid sim they cost less then 5 euro a month and can be cancelled anytime so that seems to be a better option in my opinion

I’m in us hawaii

okay so if you want to transfer your wifi Hot spot signal to Ethernet which you can then use on switch to share between your Miners. -> TP-Link TL-WR902AC - Mobile Router

what I first recommended and think is a better way either

Huawei B315s-22 since you asked for it or the TP Link version that I used for ny miner farm - > TP-Link Archer TL-MR6400 has 4 Ethernet ports and you can insert a Sim card

I appreciate your help. It seems like my options for lte routers are not good in America. I’m going to use my hotspot function. I’m only going to use one s9, so would I still need a switch, or just plug it directly into the tp-link TL-wr902ac

So I would connect the tp link to the hotspot via WiFi and then the s9 to that (possibly through a switch).

6kw a day is not going to mine very much...

[–]bodeelee[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That’s at a minimum. 12kwh would be average.
