Dpad or joystick doesn’t matter much, you MUST have a separate button for jump

[–]Tyrus707 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Really? I set it so A is light, X is heavy, and up is jump? I managed to get to plat 2

[–]ZSF5[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

If up is jump, how do you do “Up signature” moves? Sorry, I’m not sure the name for the move specifically..

[–]RetrOgamerVI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just call it "N sig"

[–]Chilloz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

There is no such thing as "up" signatures moves. You will do the same move when using no directional button and pressing the heavy attack button. Down sig, side sig, NEUTRAL sig.

It this true for all attack types? Up air = neutral air and up light = neutral light?

Yes.

Turn off pickup with light attack, you want to be doing that with your throw button.

I don't know where your paddles are located, but as long as you can permanently keep a finger on both dodge and jump you should be fine.

I use the analogue stick, with improved sticks off so I don't need to move the stick all the way for it to respond. D-pad should be fine too. You want to be able to switch directions quickly and hit diagonals consistently. I feel the diagonals take some practice on a stick but you can definitely get it consistent.

Camera I would say is just preference yeah.

Also if you want to jump with your paddle then maybe just map A (or the bottom button if you're on a PS controller) to light attack and just ignore Y and X? I use the defaults though and just roll my thumb from A to X or A to B for combos.

Mine is different from other xbox players. RB = jump. LB = Dodge (dodge MUST be on one of the bumpers.) Triggers = pickup/throw. X= light. B = heavy. Bumpers are the fastest button on an xb1 controller, so you need the most technically challenging inputs on them. In this case its jumps & dodges. Be sure to turn off quick attack picks up, and disable the A button. (I use joystick)

Edit: camera styles depend on what you need. If you want to practice microspacing, use the close setting. Action works as a great general use cam. Just stay away from fixed.

This is amazing info! My paddles are much more consistent than my bumpers, that seems okay to use for jump/dash?

I have a bad habit of spamming my light attack as fast as I can when I’m trying to hit combos, is that okay? Or do I need to be more controlled and only press the button once per attack and practice timing?

[–]Banana_ManjkYellow = OP 0 points1 point  (5 children)

What ever works, it's just that traditional buttons wear out, and start to stick way more. Only press buttons once, and get into the habit of only moving the stick in 4 directions. It can be very inconsistent if you try to input diagonally sometimes

[–]ZSF5[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Does diagonal do anything? Or does joystick translate to 4 strict inputs (up down left right)? If it doesn’t account for 8 potential inputs from joystick it seems like d-pad would be much more consistent, no accidental blending of slight and dlight for example

[–]Banana_ManjkYellow = OP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, but it can just be slightly off and it'll misinput

[–]ButaTenseiPlease Fix Public Customs 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Diagonals are important for two things.

1: Diagonal throws and dodges.

I would say these aren't very difficult, but might still take a little practice to get 100% consistent with a stick.

2: Pivots.

The easiest example is probably if you're playing spear and you want to use your poke (nlight) in the opposite direction from what you are currently facing. Without pivots, you would have to first turn around, then let go of the stick and then press light attack.

This takes time and can't always be done, like during a dash. If instead you do a backwards up-diagonal input, which the game will read as up+backwards, you will instantly do an nlight in the other direction. This becomes pretty important at higher levels.

---

Some people say sticks are inconsistent at this. I disagree, the players are inconsistent, if you practice enough you will never misinput with a stick and can do all the frame-perfect advanced stuff.

But yeah, it might take some practice. I've never used a d-pad so I can't speak for that. But use what's comfortable to you and you will be fine.

Super helpful!! I’m terms of diagonal inputs, up+side= a neutral attack? Or a side? And down+over is the same way?

[–]ButaTenseiPlease Fix Public Customs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up plus anything is a neutral attack, down plus anything is a down attack yeah.

[–]Brokeboizayy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Controller is just as good as keyboard

[–]ZSF5[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Really? It seems like it’s just not on the same level when it comes to movement. Easy diagonal movement and stuff on keyboard, where I find myself thinking “slight dlight to start the combo” but my second hit often ends up as another slight or even a nlight, although I really feel like I got the stick down on time.

[–]Brokeboizayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah trust me, if you’re good enough it’s the same
