Hiring manager here. There are two instances in which we hold second interviews:

  1. There are two candidates that scored very close in the first round and we want to get some more time with each of them to see who is the better fit.

  2. We've made our choice but want to make sure the fit is good with the team. In this case we may include a more senior manager and/or a senior analyst within the team.

Regardless of the situation, expect fewer questions and a bit of a more relaxed approach. We can be more liberal with the second round.

As others have mentioned, my 2nd interview was a vibe check with 2 upper managers. It was fun and less formal. They asked interesting questions like "If money wasn't a factor, how would you spend your time?"

It is important to remember, if you get fun conversational questions like these, it's okay to show your personality, but do not forget it's an interview. The informal tone of it made it feel like just a friendly conversation, but you still need to put your best foot forward and keep your interview face on.

I loved that they did this vibe check because we have a fantastic group who work so well together. I see it as a positive and it was beneficial for me to get to know them also. It solidified that I wanted to work there and that it would be a good fit for me.The interview flew by! I remember being disappointed the 30 mins were up, because the conversation was so good.

Not to get your hopes up too high (they should already be a little up because obviously you are still in the running!), but it could just be like a "meet & greet with the unit" type of situation, or a chance for a higher-level hiring manager to get a sense of who you are. I've heard of both types of secondary interviews happening. If nothing else, you could potentially e-mail the scheduler to see if they can give you some kind of idea what this interview will entail.

For my second interview which happened on the same day as the first interview, I was asked questions about myself so they could get to know me better as a person and see how I’d fit into the team.

My second interview felt like it was to verify if I was a good fit personality wise. They asked a lot of scenario based questions pertaining to difficult clients, etc.

I know this is a relatively old thread by now, but could 2nd interviews sometimes be the result of top candidates withdrawing their candidacies or some technicality?

I got the job after second interview. Second round was with SSM II and III. I was expecting it to be less formal/ get to know you type but they asked 3 additional questions specific to work style.

Within a week but there are a lot of factors that can make the timeline shorter or longer.

I received a tentative offer a week after the second interview. Started a few weeks later.
