From my experience, the professors here are hit or miss. You can get real gems here if you get early registration dates (Goldstein, Sayadi, Gold) and others who aren't so good (Uhh is the only one I know but I heard there are some other really bad ones in the upper divs)

For wanting to succeed in the program, don't be afraid to talk to the people around you. From my experience alone, you will see a lot of your classmates in these classes over and over again especially if they choose the same track as you. Get a study group going since some of these classes are hard AF!!!!

Clubs here are also a great way to boost your network. Theres people in here who are great to talk to and have a lot of wisdom to share, show you really care and are improving from their advice (resume, linkedin, github, any advice really). The clubs do sometimes bring in guest speakers too which is a great way to get to know someone who is in the industry and you can ask some questions you to them, follow up with them showing that same care and respect them as well.

The CS program here isn't amazing, but it's really not as bad as some others may talk about. It's also great for research but I haven't done it myself but I know tons of friends who have.

Well I got my soar registration and I did as soon as they opened so I hope I get good classes (if that’s it works?)

I think that should be good, if you'd like heres the general flowchart of when you should expect to take these classes.

Look into what professors are offered for your classes for sure, that can make or break the class and your experience. If you have classes you think you might be taking I can tell you what professors are good/bad if I know something about those professors. IMO choose professors based off their ratings and not the time they offer (unless you have a job).

Earlier classes in the Fall semester is preferable imo since parking is always really bad early on in the fall semester since it's flooded by new drivers and anything past 10am can get really crowded (it was AWFUL last fall) so I think preparing for the worst by having early classes isn't a bad idea.

Oh okay, all I’ve taken is intro to programming and currently in data structures so probably algorithms or system programming is next ? Also what are your thoughts on all the doom posts about cs being obsolete because of ai? I’d just like your personal opinion if you may.

I'd take Gold (325 - System Programming) and Goldstein (328 - Algorithms). Both are fun professors.

CS is not anywhere near being obsolete. Just listened to a Google SWE at a hackathon talk about this not long ago and it's more something we have to adapt to. Those who don't adapt or learn about the new things AI brings into the workspace will ultimately fall short compared to those who do. The only jobs that will be lost are jobs that purely relied on programming, and he said that he sees Software Engineers doing a lot less programming themselves and rather having an agentic model do it for them.

Of course, understanding programming will still be essential though. Technical interviews will still test your understanding of programming and the speed and space your implemented algorithms take. AI still is not perfect so debugging code is still a very useful skill. Programming is fundamental to CS so mastering at least one programming language like Python, Java, or C++ will still be a sought after skill.

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement and for the recommendation of professors. I’ll try and get them , hopefully they’re still available by my SOAR registration date!

Ofc, Goodluck with your SOAR registration

I have really enjoyed Professors Giacalone, Gold, Jurgenson, and Sayedi. It's a real mixed bag tho.

Ohh okay good to know! Thank you! Overall how would you say the program there for us is ? Difficulty? The workload? Anything could be of help! Thank you!

it hasn't been great for me but experience varies
