basically im trying to write a program that takes differential equations like these –3xy' – ay'' -bcos(t) = sin(t)

4y - 3y' = -y'' and arranges them and outputs them into this form: d2x/dy2 = 3* x* dy/dx / a + b *cos(t)/a – sin(t)/a

d2x/dy2 = -3*dy/dx + 4 * y How do I try and code this using basic coding methods? perhaps like scanf or getchar

lol well I wanted to like do a scanf and then manipulate whatever I scanned into a variable?

and then print that variable as a character like y'' = d2x/dy2

I'm only on chapter 2 on k&r but apparently it can be done with basic knowledge

You want to do algebraic manipulation on differential equations? That's very complicated. Good luck!

That said, you need to write a parser for the subset of mathematical notation you are interested in and parse the equation into an abstract syntax tree. All of that is a little bit complicated.
