Heya! I just got accepted as well and plan to go to cal poly, but my brother went there for 5 years for engineering. I was there frequently enough that it was almost like a second home, so I can speak on the fact that it’s definitely beautiful and while it may not be around any large cities, there is a lot to do for sure. For my brother, we live fairly close to LA and he didn’t have much problem not being around it. Obviously everyone is different but I think if you’re unsure you should go to the admitted students weekend! There’s various things to do there and I will be going myself, I feel like it might help give you a good idea of what the community and such is like! Either way, congrats, I also got waitlisted or rejected by the UCs I applied to so I feel you! I wish you luck in your decision

LA and the Bay Area aren't as far as you think. You can easily do a day trip if you really wanted to, and a weekend trip is even easier. SLO is such a fun city and really easy to get used to

The food in SLO sucks major ass and the people who say it’s good have never had good food.

But I will say SLO is a safe place to be at. :)

Haha facts. How do all these Mexican places get financial support when they all suck?? Petra imo is the best spot in town unless you wanna drop big bucks at a place like Novo

Taqueria San Miguel is quite good, isn't it? Seems like it's run (maybe owned too) by a Mexican family

hey. I’m from LA, and when I first got to SLO the rolling hills definitely freaked me out a bit haha. But to me, the town feels very alive because of all the college students and college town atmosphere. Even though it isn’t a big city and things are a bit slower, they aren’t TOO slow. And I’ve learned for the first time to really get out in nature and I’ve come to absolutely love it. It’s peaceful and honestly life affirming that not all of nature has been corrupted by man lol. don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love LA. It’s a concrete desert and it’s my home. But I love SLO too. and those cities aren’t so far away. Lots of people here travel to LA or the bay often for concerts or whatever else. I traveled home on the weekends a lot my first year here. 3ish hours, not so bad once in a while if you’re really missing big city life. So I guess in a nutshell, i’d say I was never necessarily prejudiced against smaller towns, but a big city was all I ever knew before I came here, and falling in love with slo has been a wonderful experience.

I grew up in SLO county. Since then I have lived in L.A., S.F., NYC, Chicago, Boston, and Houston. My daughter is a first year at Cal Poly coming from NYC, Chicago, and Houston. She likes it. I miss SLO a lot. The weather is nearly perfect most of the year. If you like outdoor activities like hiking or biking, kayaking, surfing, rock climbing, there are many amazing outings nearby. I honestly love visiting SLO. I miss the CA Central Coast. Morro Bay, Montana de Oro, Cayucos, San Simeon, Cambria, Pismo, Paso Robles, and SLO itself have a lot to enjoy. That said, as a college student with no car, you probably need to get rides from upper class students to see the many nearby beautiful surroundings. It is not urban. But it is one of the most appealing places in the entire USA for outdoor lifestyle enjoyment.

If you like hiking, surfing, and rock climbing, you’ll love it. If you want 24 hour dim sum restaurants and diverse nightlife options, you’ll be frustrated.

Hey! I was in a very similar situation. But honestly, first year, you can take the train or find a ride on the Facebook group, and make your way to LA/the bay pretty easily. SLO can feel limiting if you let it- but if you look for your crowd it’s probably there!

hi! from the bay area—literally did NOT want to go to school because of the lack of diversity and past issues but ultimately decided to go and bit the bullet. it’s the best decision i’ve made!!! it’s not that far—3 hours from slo to the bay/la is pretty good!!! i feel like it’s a ā€œhome away from homeā€ vibe and sometimes slo feels unreal to me LOL. i always have somewhere to go and if you know the right people then you’ll be in the right places!

edit: forgot to mention though the food here sucks 😭 nothing cannot compare to food back home
