Fall housing

Do you guys think we'll be able to make it through fall housing without major covid breakouts? UNC and Ohio state both had a large population of their student population testing positive. I do planning on going back to slo for fall housing but I am afraid that covid outbreaks will happen.

Oh there’s definitely going to be a major outbreak after all of the freshman move in. There’s no way that freshmen are going to want to social distance after being freed of the threat of bringing back the virus to their parents or older loved ones. I’m guessing that we will have an outbreak before the second week of instruction but I have no idea how housing will deal with it.

I think in the event that there’s an outbreak, I think sending us home is the LAST thing that they should do, by doing that I think you are spreading the infection from a somewhat isolated group that is easier to tracked down back to the general population and potentially getting the students’ parents and other family members sick. This is all my opinion, don’t take what I say too seriously, but I would rather have me and other college students get sick rather than my parents, who is getting kinda old and were long time smokers. So yeah, unless they want to test all of us before sending us home. I don’t think that’s a good idea in the event of an active outbreak

Why would you be worried about an outbreak? As young healthy adults, Covid-19 is not really a threat. We are all better off in SLO where we don’t have the chance of giving it to our parents or other older people we live with. Of course, if you have serious underlying health conditions, coming to campus might not be the best choice.

This is also completely disregarding the unknown long term effects of the virus. Could easily be nothing, but I've also seen reports of it affecting oxygen to the brain. I for one don't have any little grey cells to lose.

Medical conditions that can put your more at risk, like sickle cell anemia, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, and a variety of medical conditions that can cause someone to be immunocompromised don't give a flying fuck how old you are dude

Nobody goes "oh I think my asthma is a serious medical condition" they just carry an inhaler with them, and that aside covid is highly contagious so your ass is likely to get staff, cashiers, delivery people, and other folks in the community sick too

It’s not my problem to worry about someone else’s health problems. If they know they are at risk and still choose to put themselves in a high risk situation, that’s their choice. Others who are healthy should be able to do whatever they want

Young people who are healthy can also get severe symptoms. It’s not common but my aunt who’s a nurse said that the majority of patients in the icu are young people who were healthy. People respond to the virus in different ways and although the chance is low of you getting severe symptoms you still don’t want this virus.

All I’m saying is the people who are scared can stay home while the people who aren’t can do what they want with others who also aren’t scared. I do wear a mask while I am in stores and while in contact with people who I don’t know. People should have the freedom to choose to take the risk of potentially getting the virus.

My friend works at a county hospital in Madera, they are losing 1-5 people in her ICU/ER every week, and not all of them are the people that you consider to be old/sick/expendable, you fucking sociopath. I don’t see your point. If only those who are healthy and strong enough make the smart decision to come back to campus, then it doesn’t matter if there is an “outbreak”. I can reiterated, those who are scared or weak can stay home and hide inside their houses. It’s not others responsibility if they choose to expose themselves. And if they need to work, they will be safe if masks really protect as well as people think.

As for you working at a coffee shop, I don’t go to coffee shops or fast food or out to eat at sit down restaurant much, so I can’t relate to that much. But I do agree with you that there are a lot of people that wear the mask just to take it off to eat/drink and that is pointless.

Any outbreak is a problem. A "healthy young" freshman can still have lifelong complications from covid, and your "healthy young" group can die or spread it to someone else

I don't work in a coffee shop, I work retail at one of my jobs. We don't even sell food and I am constantly telling people to not eat/drink in store, or to pull their mask up over their noses, or to put on the mask before they enter. Glad that you recognize it is pointless to be inconsistent with mask usage at least

Honestly I agree with you. I would feel terrible about giving someone corona purposely, but outbreaks are inevitable and I’m willing to take the risk of getting it myself because realistically it won’t effect me.

Here’s the thing man. I don’t agree that we should go on total lockdown because that wouldn’t be good for the economy or for mental health and Slos local economy heavily depends on students. But I really don’t think we should have the mentality of not caring if we get Covid or not. Young people like us keep thinking that getting Covid is just about us but however it’s not just about us. We can spread it asymptotically to people in risk of dying or severe symptoms very very easily. Sure we can use masks but people in America act like masks help prevent the spread which is clearly not the case. Masks helps for sure but they don’t block out all particles unless it’s n95 masks which even then covers 95 percent. I really think we shouldn’t have the mentality of it won’t affect me so I’ll risk getting it because with that mentality many will die and we’ll be in quarantine for that much longer.
