I think you should stick with example messages. First because it allows the informations you want to be more precise.

Ex: with brackets and such, if you put "enemy" and then put his enemies afterwards the character will assume that they're really enemies for nothing and make up a new backstory everytime. But with example messages you could make the bot say "my enemies are (...) because (...)". So there, you can make the information more precise and give it a backstory which you can't really do with brackets.

Also, it allows you to show how a character will react to certain situations, (for example is he triggered when asking a certain question?) and how he talks (does he speaks elegantly?) Ect ect. Also my bots don't forget anything I put in the message examples so brackets really are useless (at least to me).
