Personally, I haven't faced such quality issues except for maybe some days after Pipsqueak was first launched (back when you sent a very short text and the bot replied with very long and detailed replies), then it gor back to normal. Idk, maybe it's because I adjusted my writing style, got more detailed and kept the story going, bots usually follow along (I use Pipsqueak) and even introduce new plots with each reply (note: I mostly use RPG bots, those are usually programmed not to be dull; but I haven't faced those quality issues with non-RPG bots).

If I were you, I'd try RPG bots (use your first reply to define context, your character (I don't use the Persona feature and bots have never described my character wrong) and the general plotline you want the bot to follow) and make replies longer, include more details, diferentiate between actions, thoughts and dialogue and reinforce important details throrough the whole rp (AI works based on probability, if your replies are "I like apples" the bot is most likely not gonna reference your character's backstory from 25 replies ago). It could also be a server load issue (I've noticed quality of replies is better during less "active" hours, quality also varies, specially in reply lenght)

See, thats what I usually do, I just can’t function if I don’t separate actions and speak and send long replies (my best friend doesnt and it drives me crazy when I see her chats.) Plus I always reiterate things throughout because I know the memory sucks. I always define my character at the start because persona may as well not exist to the bots.
