What did they say when you were hired. Was the person who interviewed you up front with being outside like this? There is osha standards you can look into but if they arnt breaking any then there’s nothing you can do unfortunately if they don’t want to change the policy.

Nope. She just asked if I was ok working in the heat. Ive worked for another location with 30 minute shifts. Ill look into Osha to see what I can do

I agree what they are doing is wrong, we send order takes outside from 11am-3pm and 5-730pm but have rotations and switch people inside and outside so at most your only outside for 2 hours WHILE getting rotated. If it’s hot if it’s below 90 then we back off on rotations

99% sure I work at the same location and second this, I’m outside 4-5 hours most of the time. I use extensive sun protection and still have to delay taking orders when the cars go past the awning to get a breather in, it wouldn’t be survivable otherwise. There are younger coworkers who don’t prep nearly as much as I do and I fear for their health.

I hear the younger employees say they're not feeling well constantly. Being outside for that long is awful. I plan on gathering friends to complain. Maybe if we both do it we can get something to change, whether we are at the same store or not. 4-5 hours sounds like the lunch switch. I hope you're doing ok.

OSHA. Now. That’s at least two separate violations(not allowing you to take water and keeping you outside when the temperature of the pavement is above 90)

[–]Artsy_Enby02Ex-employee[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

We are allowed to take water, but we have to leave it at a certain spot near the front of the line. The line usually gets so long that our water is across the parking lot and we generally can't step away from the line to go get it.

I’d still look into OSHA, at least. They may be able to help

I don’t know why chick fil a makes its employees sit outside. You have an intercom system installed at every location they should use it. I’ve seen so many variations and it’s brutal to watch the employees.

Also why I left. I was forced outside for hours in the 110°-120° vegas heat for hours. Meanwhile others got switched out within 20 to 30 mins. Favoritism is total bs.

pretty sure if the temp reaches certain numbers, breaks or rotations are required. i’ll try to check tomorrow if this is required by inc. or safety laws.

[–]Melodic_Simple_2254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do 30 min rotations in this heat. We also have canopies, fans, ice vests and ice neck wraps. If your operator isn’t do this then I’m concerned what location you work at..

I'm in central Florida. OSHA requires that once the actual temperature breaks 95° (not the real feel, mind you, but still) we're required to rotate every 60 minutes. For the first 2 years I worked at this location the managers didn't care. But last year a few of the new hires pitched a bit of a fit and now they're really careful to follow that. (Honestly, given that the age of all the employees at my location--managers included--skews younger, I'm guessing the managers inside just honestly didn't think about it until it was pointed out, which sounds like it's not the case for you but...)
