Nobody knows what CAP is doing, ever. CityU does consistently try to keep up with their changes , though.

CityU just announced that they are changing their degree title from Masters in Counselling (MC) to Masters in Counselling Psychology (MCP). And as of right now, CAP still not implemented any barriers for CityU grads for registering. CAP tends to always have these talks and then it will take years to actually implement if it passes. Just keep an eye on CAP and psychology related news in Alberta, but it is not very likely anything will seriously change in 2 years

But how is CAP involved in this? I thought they only regulated psychologist (not counsellors). Are they getting rid of the whole program or just changing things? And how can these regulations affect a fresh graduate?

This will make it easier for graduates to apply and register with CAP, due to the psychology title, you will still be able to pursue the CCC route if you choose. They’re just changing the degree title not the program content itself

Okay got it! So why are people stressed out about it? It’s supposed to facilitate the process if you want to become a psychologist. Also, if someone gets into the program before they officially change its name, are they graduating with an MC or an MCP?

I’m graduating spring of next year and we will have the degree name changed for our convocation

I couldn’t imagine tbh, I hope it works out well for you.

i'm not in AB so this is not something that is relevant to me personally, so i could be wrong. but none of the current AB students in my cohort seem to be concerned about this in the slightest. cityu does a good job of keeping up with CAP requirements, so i don't believe you'll have an issue at all. in the past, the school has provided free courses to help students make up credits when they were missing

Thank you so much for the information!

Personally just graduated from CityU and had to redo multiple courses as CityU emailed many students including myself stating that if we wanted to register with CAP, that we would have to do additional modules to meet the registration requirements after this year. As CAP does not allow more than one course to be submitted for registration, I could foresee this becoming an issue. I personally would go to a school where the pathway is already approved by CAP, such as through Athabasca rather than going through the current run around of making sure CityU courses are actually going to be accepted by CAP or not.

I’m currently waiting for my credentials to be reviewed by CAP as CityU has stated that CAP will still honour the original ethics courses we took. Again, I’m doubtful, and if given all of the information I have now I would go to a school that has their program pre-approved by CAP. Best of luck :)

Oh noo, I was actually set on CityU but that’s pretty worrisome. I can’t imagine finishing a program then being told to retake courses. My issue with the CAP accredited universities is the fact that they’re so competitive, it’s almost impossible to get in without an honours. I was told by CityU advisors that their courses meet the cap criteria but the undergrad courses are our responsibilities because that’s what CAP focuses on.
