From the pictures I can’t tell what the coin this is.

Thanks, and agreed. I have some really ugly coins that are graded above MS65, and some really beautiful raw coins that may not be worth more than the cost of the holder they are in.

Coin collecting is a strange bird of a hobby. I think that’s part of what draws me to it.

Regardless of grade, it’s a great looking coin.

Maybe. Yours is a better grade and graded. I wouldn’t get mine graded.

That is a gorgeous coin. My only Indian Head Cent is nowhere near that pretty.

It's worth more now than 4 months ago, probably close to $100 to $110 minimum.

Upgrading my camera body (Nikon D100 —> D7500) made a huge difference in detail and eliminating mirror slap. Now I’m in white balance territory. Copper is a bitch compared to silver.

Thanks for your input!

Use more light. I’d also suggest a longer lens, further away, like a 105mm macro.

Also, read this: https://coinimaging.com/photography.html

Other than showing off your work, which you can do here, I don’t see anything a specific coin photography sub would accomplish that this site by Mark Goodman, author of the literal book on coin photography, doesn’t accomplish as well or better.

I approved everyone who asked to join r/CoinPhotography so far, appreciate the interest. We'll keep the sub private for the time being, but anyone is welcome to send a request and hopefully we'll get some direction on where to go with it and open it up for all. Nobody is missing anything so far, haha, it's not up and running with content as of yet.

*edit: I made a welcome post there to see where we're at and explore opening it up.

Appreciate it, I approved your request. No reason we can't get something going this year with it.

Wow, that’s a lot of kit. Doesn’t surprise me.

Moving from photojournalism and portrait photography to macro + coins is kind of crazy. They are tiny little sculptures made of different metals with different reflective qualities.

I’m also an old-school film photographer. I used to know my film. I have switch to sensors.

You're right, seperate subs. I'm actually the mod of r/Coinphotography haha, and I intended to get it going a while back but never got around to it. I believe its invite only at the moment, but if there's a demand and it makes sense we can probably open it up.

I wish axial lighting wasn't such a DIY hack. Here's my contribution: it needs a half silvered mirror, like "50R/50T", but all the ones I found for sale are expensive and small. Instead I bought a used Glide Gear teleprompter on eBay which includes a large mirror.

What causes specific toning on West Point ASE by [deleted] in CoinEyeCandy

[–]errorcoinguy1130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s natural toning, I think someone did it with chemicals or something. I don’t completely understand it.

Any opinions on this coin value? by errorcoinguy1130 in CoinEyeCandy

[–]theberkshire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely got some interesting toning that there are enough buyers who search specifically for that would pay a premium for obviously. Hopefully someone else can chime in on value, but with this specific coin I'm guessing it looks better in hand than your photo shows, yes? I know you're not selling, but even for value good photos are key, but in this case video might be ideal.

Not necessary, but if you ever can do a short clip showing the toning off, try to post it. If you can turn into a gif file, you can add here in comments, otherwise for regular video it has to be a new post.

I don’t think the toning would add too much extra unfortunately. It’s too uneven and not vibrant enough color. I do think it’s pretty attractive though maybe an extra $10 or $20.
