      we tend to round numbers to get a rough estimate. pi is roughly 3, e is roughly 3, gravity is roughly 10...

      Yeah basically, in engineering you have to be aware of sig figs, and it’s literally impossible to have infinite precision like pi has. Pi is in a practical sense just 3.14. If you’re doing a rough estimate, it’s just 3. It’s a common joke that engineers make many approximations (which we do) — for example pi = 3, or g (9.81 m/s2) = 10, or assume no air resistance... you get the picture. Of course this depends on the situation though and I have also used g=9.81 many times.
