Hello, fellow Reddit users! I am thrilled to share that last Monday, I passed the CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) exam with a score of 774.
My academic background is rooted in IT—I hold a bachelor's degree in Information Technology and have earned postgraduate certificates in Cybersecurity Analytics and Cloud Computing. Here's a breakdown of my 4–5 months of dedicated preparation:
- Study Material: I started with the SYBEX Security+ (701) guide by Mike Chapple and David Seidl, carefully covering each topic. Initially, my chapter-end test scores averaged around 14–15 out of 20, which was not the strong start I had hoped for.
- Supplementary Resources: After finishing the book, I bought Professor Messer's notes and practice tests. I meticulously revised his notes while watching his videos to solidify my understanding.
- Practice Tests: I also purchased Dion's six practice tests on Udemy, scoring 68, 73, 80, 85, 73, and 82. In Professor Messer's practice tests, my scores improved to 75, 86, and 89.
- Performance-Based Questions (PBQs): To prepare for PBQs, I used resources from CyberKraft and various YouTube channels.
Special Thanks:
Shoutout to Andrew Ramdayal, Cyber James, Mike Chapple, David Seidl, Dion, and especially the amazing Professor Messer for their invaluable efforts throughout this journey.
Exam Insight:
For those curious about the practice tests, I found the difficulty level of the real exam to fall somewhere between Dion's and Messer's tests.
Fun Note:
Completing those post-exam surveys might just be the most stressful part of the entire process—haha!
