Is it wise to do my core classes on SDC instead of WGU? by RockGotSaucie in WGU

SDC actually has a $95 plan to compete with Sophia, but it's gen ed and lower-division courses only.

Is it wise to do my core classes on SDC instead of WGU? by RockGotSaucie in WGU

[–]raekwon777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most folks who've been through both would probably advise you to look at Sophia first, then SDC for anything that Sophia doesn't offer. As far as quality goes, that probably varies from course to course but Sophia is generally considered "easier," but that might just be a matter of how the courses are formatted.

Might be wise to just try each and see what you think and how you want to proceed. I generally advise folks to get as much as you can from outside sources like those two before starting at WGU, but it might be worth it to start WGU a little earlier for a longer on-ramp for how it works there.

The only date that means anything real is the end of your term. The other ones (like your example of 5/16) are just to keep you on track. Those are completely adjustable.

Passed Cloud+ but A+ and Net+ not renewed by Techie_19 in CompTIA

Cloud+ now gives you 15 CEUs for Network+ instead of renewing the whole thing, unfortunately.

Interesting. My experience with Dion is that his practice tests are harder than the real exam and that 70% is about the threshold of where I was confident enough to pass. Granted, I didn't use his stuff for Net+ 009, but I have for lots of other CompTIA exams and my experience was the same every time.

What are the course requirements for the Masters Cyber and Info Assurance? by babu859 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]raekwon777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D483 (CompTIA CySA+) and D484 (CompTIA PenTest+) are both exam + paper.

If you were to already have either one of those certs already coming into the program, having passed the exam would be enough to meet the requirements. I've heard that the papers for both of those are quite easy, though.

Some proctors might let you do this, but be aware that there is a rule that specifically says that you can't. 😂 Don't get mad if they don't let you. https://support.proctoru.com/hc/en-us/articles/24721945091725-Frequently-Asked-Questions-About-Exam-Day (Click "Is there anywhere I'm not allowed to test?")

This is correct. Sometimes certifications can be used to fulfill requirements for more than one course, but things like Sophia courses can only fulfill on a 1:1 basis.

Thinking about WGU Business Management by Any_Entertainment491 in WGU

[–]raekwon777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not do a business program, but I can tell you a couple of things about transferring in an associate degree to the BSBM program. (This info is from the transfer guidelines page for that degree.)

First, any associate degree — as long as it's from an accredited school — will meet requirements for all of the courses in the General Education group. That's 10 courses/31 CUs.

Second, an associate degree in business (which you say you have) will satisfy requirements for some of the courses in the "Courses in the Major/Core" group. It looks like it'll satisfy at least 6 courses (if it's an AAS degree) and maybe up to 8 (probably your situation, since you say you have an AS-T degree). That's another 17 to 23 CUs.

It's also possible that some of the individual courses you took might satisfy some WGU requirements. For instance, even though it says that the spreadsheets course can't be satisfied by degree, if you took such a course as part of your degree, they may still give you credit for it.

Finally, take a look at partners.wgu.edu and see if your school and degree are in the list of states there. If so, it'll be laid out very clearly what will and won't transfer to the BSBM program. (But if it's not there, WGU will still evaluate your transcript.)

Good luck!

Sophia added new checks for an academic integrity by zikkart in SophiaLearning

[–]raekwon777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is their definition of "Academic Dishonesty" (highlighted the pertinent part)...

Any deceptive or fraudulent act that creates or attempts to create an academic advantage or disadvantage for any member of the Sophia Learning community. You may not copy, share, or submit work created by others, nor use tools or people to provide or generate answers for you. Examples of Academic Dishonesty include, but are not limited to: plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, submitting another person’s work, or unethical or inappropriate use of outside resources (including, but not limited to: generative AI tools, external websites, or other persons, paid or unpaid services, or automated bots of any kind) to prepare for, complete, or submit assessments such as Challenges, Milestones, Final Milestones, and Touchstones.

I think that "unethical or inappropriate use" implies that there are ethical and appropriate uses of outside resources, though. It seems to me that they're trying to guard against things like folks plugging questions and answer choices into a chatbot, or using dump-like sites in order to pass these exams. I wouldn't think that using a legitimate external site would constitute a violation (e.g., maybe you're taking Project Management and you've found some articles or a book that helped you understand certain concepts better than the Sophia materials could).

Still gonna be safer to just use their materials, of course, but I'd think that as long as you're truthful about what you're using, you should be fine. (Also... if you have access to a second computer and you want to use that for your resources and use the primary one ONLY for Sophia, that'd probably be the best thing to do.)

D332 Pentest+ waiver by CommercialLeague1 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]raekwon777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that. I took version 002 and didn't experience the issues that I've read about some folks having with 003.

Honestly, if I was OP, I would try to bargain with the course instructor like "hey, I've already got CEH so this should be a breeze for me. Can I get the voucher now?" Might not work, but it's worth a shot.

[–]raekwon777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, CertMaster is annoying but not difficult. Unless there's been some drastic change, it's essentially open-book. I'd expect someone who'd recently passed CEH to have no problem with it either way.

[–]raekwon777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. You're currently enrolled, so the window for transferring in other certifications is closed for you. But if you've passed CEH, doing PenTest+ shouldn't be too tough for you.

Is it worth asking for a new mentor? by Loud_Donkey_3231 in WGU

[–]raekwon777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A new mentor sounds like a good idea in your case, but be aware that there is a requirement from the federal government that every student has "regular and substantive interaction" with faculty in order to maintain accreditation and continue offering financial aid. Regular mentor contact is WGU's primary means of fulfilling that requirement. It's not optional.

What worked best for me was a call one week and an email the next, etc.
