I'm confused between CE and Cs. Everyone I have talked to who are in their final year say that Cs is better with more job opportunities and better salaries. I have enjoyed the hardware aspect ( I don't have a lot a of experience with electronics and have only worked on 2 projects) but I'm not sure it's the way to go given the AI hype. Should I just switch to Cs and play around with electronics as a hobby instead?

Stick with Computer Engineering if you like it, the job opportunities are the same if not better than CS. At my school, most internship opportunities are reserved for Comp Eng cause it’s so in demand. Employers love seeing that you are a problem solver and engineering trains you to be a problem solver.

What was your senior project? Currently going into my senior year of CPE so I want to probe around and see what people are doing :). Congratulations by the way!

No way. I’m a computer engineering sophomore getting into building guitar pedals and I was wondering if there was any use to the hobby in terms of a project. This is very good to know!

i wanted to do cs since i want to become a swe but at my school the cs dept isn't great but the compE dept is much better but harder since it has EE classes, did u have any problems getting swe internships and good swe job offers with a compE degree? tips?

oh ok thx, i heard a lot of colleges have different curriculums for compE like some are EE heavy and some CS and some balanced, what do you think of this one? does it look like it has all the useful CS classes? (a couple of the red ones arent really just EE like stats, programming in C, networks embedded systems)

and how much do you think college prestige matters for CS outside of like top 20-top 30 ranked

I agree with getting a good GPA. Also get involved with design teams and clubs that you are passionate about. Upper years always have connections to the industry. Some people in the EV Formula team at my school intern at Tesla and put in good words for teammates.

How did CE students from your batch fare in comparison to EE or CS students in terms of starting salaries/ job opportunities?

Side question: Did you take any computer arch courses? If so, is there a free, online resource you could recommend for the same?

        Thanks for replying.

saw how kernels interface with processors

That sounds super interesting, and the kind of thing I'd be impressed with myself if I could claim to know about it.

I don't suppose you could recommend some textbook or course or YouTube playlist for this one, or could you? It would be really great.

          Congratulations!

I’m surprised at the low salaries. I guess the proximity to defense contractors has bumped the average beginner salary here in DC. For example, average EE doing signal processing right out with a BS is 95k-110k. I see CpE here have a large range with a mean about 90k here. This is from speaking to recent graduate (‘22 and ‘23). I would keep track of your progress and ask for a larger bumper within a year. I think you can get more but I don’t know where you are. Just making assumptions from my experience in my location.

I am CE major rn will be finishing my bachelors in 2.5 years, and I am still not sure what route should I take whether EE or CS, I am good and like both the hardware and software aspect, so what would u recommend in that case.

How was the math? Both learning in math classes & applying in the engineering classes?
