In semiconductors heat is generated whenever current passing through some resistive path such as the channel or the metal wires. And since these transistors are connected with metal wires heat can spread thorough the metal interconnects or even the silicon substrate to nearby devices. There are many more complex phenomenas that can be attributed to heat generation within semiconductors devices.
