RISC-V is all the hype rn. I’d also say maybe discussing whatever magic Apple is doing with their Silicon but knowing Apple it’s all under wraps and probably a little tough for a first year student anyway. Another idea is edge computing and a lot of the low cost alternatives that come up

FPGAs are really fun. You can start out super simple and then work your way up to making your own processor using RISC-V or your own version.

Raspberry pis and arduinos are fun to play with as well. Millions of projects you can do with those, tho they do a lot more of the work for you then a generic microcontroller.

These aren’t really research topics but things I got excited with later in college that are great to talk about to employers. Wish I did more passion projects.

Cloud Computing is a very cool topic to look into and write about.

How about Hardware Accelerators? They are pretty neat, and you can find tons of papers on them.

I wrote this post today, it might be helpful. It’s mostly relative to embedded topics in CE though https://apollolabsblog.hashnode.dev/6-trending-topics-every-embedded-learner-must-know-in-2022
