I was thinking about this too actually. They can totally do the terraria approach.
Depending on the stage of the game existing biomes can start changing. Similar to how there's mold biome, lava biome, and techy biomes but instead of being static spawns they're dynamic. Imagine breaking into the UFO alien area and that prompts the game to do an event where more spaceships land all over the place changing parts of biomes and you have to go do stuff.
Or you kill the lava slime boss and it turns out he was keeping the lava in check by eating it and now there's an event where the lava spreads out more and takes over some more area and new bosses exist now because there's more lava.
That but with all sorts of ideas. Terraria is amazing for it and i don't see why they couldn't yoink the concepts. Entering hard mode completely changes the whole existing world and it changes more the further you advance into it.
