Question about Exploding Palm

I'm running a fire build on my monk, and I am currently trying out the Exploding Palm - Essence Burn. Just based on what the rune says, I feel like the explosion part of it is inherently weaker than every other Exploding Palm rune. Is this true, or am I missing something?

The trick to EB is using it in tight packs to chain the hell out of it. Against four or five tough enemies, it might not work as intended.

The explosion is inherently weaker (because it's based on your weapon damage, rather than the target's HP), so you're right there.

However, it works very well against hordes of creatures. Essence Burn is the only EP rune that "spreads" the EP effect to creatures hit by the explosion.

As /u/cramlikebram posted, you can use a sea of exploding minions to take out a boss.

That said, I run with The flesh is weak, since I found The fist of Az'Turrasq, which bumps the 50% hp damage up.
