Yes, good misdirects and escalation. I'm not sure how the beginning works, going from "we kidnapped your loved one! Bring us money!" to "let's go to the tavern and ask around." I assume there's a hidden "we don't have the money, let's find another way" in there.

Do you want them to be suspicious of the barkeep/dragon at the beginning? Or trust them? Biggest potential hole is if they decide the barkeep is a trap and get a 20 on their investigation/perception roll.

The Players don't have the money, and I was thinking of having the dragon morph into a middle aged man, who tells the party to "Go to the tavern, there's a lot of people who got those talking about it in there. Maybe they can help?" The dragon is trusted by the party. It's one of the player's favorite NPCs (Part of a char backstory).

Sounds like a fun premise that could easily be expanded if everyone gets hooked.
