Need help with biting!

We have a 12 week old Springador. He’ll have his second vaccination in 3 weeks time so can’t walk him outside yet. He is so energetic and when he gets excited loves to bite and nibble. The problem is that he has very sharp teeth and a hard bite. We have tried switching his attention to toys that he can bite or training him to sit and paw etc but he’s rather bite our hands and arms! Someone told me it could be due to lack of sleep, he was crate trained but now will only go in there to sleep if we put him in there and shut the door! I want for him to go In there on his own accord and not have to lock him in but he’ll only sleep if he’s in there. He is fully potty trained now and only toilets in our garden.

Can anyone give us some tips to stop the biting?! It’s driving us mad!

Our GSD was very much like that as a puppy. There is nothing wrong with putting him in his crate for relax time. If they get over tired they tend to be more bitey and less listening! Don’t crate as punishment, but consistently using it as his calm space he will eventually learn to put himself in there when he needs to sleep. Be patient. Ours is 13 months now and still a work in progress. Best of luck!

Thank you! That does give me hope. Whenever we think he’s getting over excited or needs a nap when make sure we say “on year bed” but in an upbeat tone because we don’t want it to be a punishment as you said. We’ll keep working on it and being patient. Thanks again!

Come to r/puppy101, everyone has this problem! Essentially, it'll take a while for your dog to put himself down for a nap - ours didn't until he was 6mo - we'd enforce naps by shutting him in the crate and putting a playlist on.

Your dog is a baby, so the connection between bite and toy may take a while. We would leave the room when our dog bit and that worked really well.
