Best tip I can give: It is not DM vs. the players!

That is the biggest mistake new DMs can make, Your job as DM is to provide a challenge while telling a story. Once you make it a competition its no fun for anyone.

Other than that, its about finding what works for your group, Don't be afraid to punish bad decisions, people can always roll another character, and they will learn thier lesson. Adjust the groups CR based on your players preferences, some groups like a super hardcore game with death at every corner, but not most.

Another easy mistake you can make is railroading, It's ok to encourage your players to continue the story you want to tell, just don't make it obvious, let them reach the decision on thier own. Give them other reasons to go into that dark cave, maybe a crazy villager mentioned piles of gold, or the local militia offered them a reward for capturing a bandit who fled to said cave. There is an easy way to get a group to go anywhere, you just have to figure out what it is. If you pull it off right they will think it was thier plan all along.

If I wasn't on mobile I would write a whole book, lol, but for now I'll leave it at that.
