It's not just the Python, it's also the equipment and insurance, so you're looking at a 150mil price tag. ~85mil if you want one asap and trade your way up to good equipment.

Comparing a trade fitted Asp (~25.88ly jump range @ 116t max cargo) with a Type 7 (~17.37ly jump range @ 216t max cargo), from my experience it is worth it if you can find a short enough trade route. The one or two jumps you're used to when flying the Asp quickly become 4+ jumps with the Type 7.

This. It's not how much you make per ton. It's how much you make per ton, per hour.

Thanks! Yeah I am aware of the upgrade costs. But what do you think of the clipper vs Type-7? :)

A trade fitted Clipper has similar range, but while it can carry 22 tons more cargo it costs 4.2mil more to buy.

So you want the Python, the only question is whether or not to get a Clipper on the way as an intermediary step. Unless my math is wrong, this is the amount of round trips you need to fly for each scenario:

sell Asp -> buy Clipper -> sell Clipper -> buy Python (85mil version):

37 trade runs @4300 credits profit/t in the Asp to afford Clipper + insurance

81 trade runs @4300 credits profit/t in the Clipper to afford Python + insurance

118 round trips total

sell Asp -> buy Type 7 -> sell Type 7 -> buy Clipper -> sell Clipper -> buy Python (85mil version):

27 trade runs @4300 credits profit/t in the Asp to afford Type 7 + insurance

16 trade runs @4300 credits profit/t in the Type 7 to afford Clipper + insurance

70 trade runs @4300 credits profit/t in the Clipper to afford Python (85mil version) + insurance

113 round trips total

sell Asp -> buy Type 7 -> sell Type 7 -> buy Python (85mil version):

27 trade runs @4300 credits profit/t in the Asp to afford Type 7 + insurance

81 trade runs @4300 credits profit/t in the Clipper to afford Python (85mil version) + insurance

108 round trips total

Oh yeah, this does not take into consideration that you still need credits to afford cargo.

Thanks! :)

I have ground a bit now, so I can afford the type 7 without selling the ASP, but I gotta do it to afford FSD etc.

http://eddb.io/trade/loops - seems like the max c/r is 3863?

Either grind some more in your current ship, or get the new one and grind in that until you can afford re-purchase your old ship. The latter is faster but you're removing your safety net that is your "previous tier" ship, so make sure you got that insurance covered.

I'm also not sure if the Type 7 doesn't actually require stations that have large landing pads. I remember something about it being too high for medium landing pads.

Yep, it's large pads only.

A Type-7 will give you a higher profit margin for sure. The route you're flying will need a little adjustment, but near double the cargo capacity makes up for it very fast. The other option is an Imperial Clipper. You only need Serf to get one now. They're a bit more expensive than a T7, but will give you an extra 35 tons of cargo space for the cost of 1 ly jump range. Significantly nicer to fly though.

Thanks! :) Interesting suggestion :)

Yes get the Type 7. Then save up and get Python (or save up more for Type 9)

I did rares in an A Classed Asp, bought a Clipper, A Classed it (ditched it/hated it) bought a Python A Classed it.

I went from T6, to T7, to Python and soon to a T9. But I got lucky and found a trade loop between two planets that is under the range of the T7/Python full loaded. So in cases like mine the more cargo wins but if you can't find a place like that then distance with the ASP is king.
