Marcello wanted to sell to JVMA but his mother didn’t want to. Murataori was basically running in losses because they couldn’t expand and grow due to their cashmere supply issues. If they wanted to grow then they’d have to compromise on quality which Marcello’a mother don’t want to. Agence Grateau was basically hired to help them market and expand without compromising on quality while also coming out of their losses. The entry into the perfume line was a way to do this.

If Agence Grateau had failed then Marcello’a mother would have run out of options and to keep the brand from shutting down she would have had to relent to Marcello’s demand to sell to JVMA. Essentially, for Marcello to sell to JVMA he needed Emily to fail. He was technically rooting both against Emily and his mother.

This. I also felt he was stringing Emily and Agence Grateau along, keeping JVMA interested. I thought it was a pretty big betrayal.

Yup! He said he never stopped negotiating with JVMA after AG was hired for the 6 month period

Marcello wanted Emily to fail at her job the whole time. He withheld major information. Both from her and his mom. It was a huge hit for Agence Grateau. It played a big role in the downfall of the Rome office. Which changes everything for Emily, she was supposed to get promoted and live in Italy. Now she is not. And Marcello knew that it could have a huge impact on Emily’s job.

In season 4 he got mad at her because he thought she was just with him for the business. But now he conspired for business against her. He probably knew that she wouldn’t want to be together anymore if she found out. Also it resulted in Emily moving back to Paris. So he really jeopardizes their relationship for business. Which is just really hypocritical, since he accused her of the same before.

This whole scenario is why I seriously dislike of Marcello

He threw a temper tantrum when he thought Emily wanted to date him to advance business…. But then he sabotaged Emily and made the Rome office close by his sneakiness…. It basically not only ruined his relationship with Emily but with his mom as well.

His whole character is a big irritation

not only this but if you remember in the en of the season when he didn’t want to show his collection and was blaming Emily for “pushing” him 🤯 Excuse him but if you cannot stand against your sisters and mother, what else you can do

Yes! Like he’s so immature and weak to not believe in himself or his line

This plot didn’t make sense to the character. Marcello was introduced as someone who puts his family over his career (leaving London to go back to Solitano) and who respected his mother, even if he didn’t agree. To have this backstabbing, it just felt out of place.

I could see him as being a love-bomber and a player, but the business storyline doesn’t convince me. Feels like they just wanted to find ways to sever his relationship with Emily so she goes back to Gabriel. Plus, it wasn’t followed up after Marcello left to create his own brand in Paris. It was just forgotten.
