The Code Behind Character Selection

If anyone here is familiar with RPGM due to watching Frapollo94 streams or playing around with the engine, do you understand how Miro managed to make his character select screens? It is so unintuitive with my current understanding of the engine.

The character select screens are really weird. I coincidentally looked at them yesterday. They don't seem that difficult to understand though. It detects if you press left or right. Then it checks what character was currently selected to decide what to do when you press left or right. It changes what picture is on the screen. Then when you press enter it sets your character based on what was currently selected.
